FAQ
The Answers You Need
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
A great place to start is with our Introductory Special. Our instructors will teach you a few popular ballroom dances, see which ones click with you, and recommend a path for more learning (we offer nightly group classes, practice dance parties, and personal lessons Monday-Saturday. Click here to book your first lesson!
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
We recommend wearing business casual or practice dance wear for lessons and group classes. For our social dances and special events anywhere from business casual to semi-formal is normal.
For shoes, we ask gentlemen to wear dress shoes or loafers and we ask ladies to wear flats or heels that are secured to your foot. We also ask that you designate a specific pair of shoes that are cleaned off and you bring those shoes with you to the studio to change into. Sandals and tennis shoes are not recommended as they can cause injury.
WHAT ABOUT GROUP CLASSES? HOW DO I JOIN?
Our beginning group classes are open to everyone. You don’t need any experience or a partner to have a great time and learn something new. The instructor will start with the very basic step, add a move or two, and have everyone switch partners throughout the class to practice their steps with a variety of people. By the end of class, you’ll have learned the basic patterns of one dance. You can register ahead online here. Classes are $15 per drop in for the first week only and $48 for the entire four week series. If there are 2 or less people in a group class, a half of a personal lesson will be taught or the series will be cancelled for the month and you will get a credit or refund.
WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL MY LESSON?
We do enforce a 24 hour cancellation policy. To avoid being charged for your lesson, we ask that you give 24 hours or more to cancel or reschedule. We do understand that mistakes happen so the first time is a freebie. Afterwards, we will waive your cancellation fee if you reschedule within the same week. Please be aware that our instructors can have full schedules, though, and you may not be able to reschedule within the same week and therefore you will still be charged for your lesson.
WHAT ABOUT WINTER WEATHER?
As we are located in Wisconsin, please be prepared to give yourself extra time when the weather gets a little uncooperative. We keep our dancers informed through email newsletters, our studio website, social media channels, and posted announcements in the studio. Be sure to check these platforms regularly for the latest news, events, and reminders.
ARE YOU LGTBQ FRIENDLY?
Absolutely! We welcome anyone and everyone who wants to learn how to ballroom dance. We use gender neutral language in all of our lessons by referring to dancers as leaders or followers. You can choose which role you'd like to dance in but we ask that you stay in the same role so material doesn't get overwhelming for you.
WHEN CAN I GO TO INTERMEDIATE CLASSES?
The short answer on “how to get into intermediate class” is to take private lessons. They’re the easiest way to be prepared for more advanced classes with the foundational information that makes more difficult moves easy. The longer answer is: if there’s an Intermediate class you’d like to go to, if you can name the basic timing for that dance and the last few patterns of the beginner syllabus associated with that dance, then you’re prepared.
WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO SWITCH PARTNERS IN GROUP CLASSES?
We love building community here at MBC and one of the great benefits of switching partners is that you'll learn 35% faster! I know we all suffer from a bit of separation anxiety when we switch but this is your chance to work out any mistakes with others so that when it's time to come back to the partner you came with, you'll be even stronger partnership! If that doesn't convince you then we recommend sticking to personal lessons or grab a few of your friends and schedule a private group class series with us!
