Student of the Month: Janet Zimmerman

Why did you start dancing? I started dancing because I dated someone who loved to dance. For at least the first year or two, dancing was so stressful that I would have quit, except for my partner. Now that I’ve danced for a while, I dance because I love it.

How long have you been dancing? I think for about 4 or 5 years

What do you do for a living? I’m retired but when working was an accountant and commercial rental property manager.

What are your favorite dance styles? I like club dances best: Rumba, Night Club 2 Step, West Coast Swing, Hustle, Salsa, ChaCha

Tell us about how dancing has been good for you? I love the movement and the way it makes me feel. I love the personal contact and doing movement in partnership. Dancing has made me happier and has helped me to develop better body awareness, though I’ve got a long way to go on the body awareness.

What would you say to someone who is hesitant to try dance? Try it, and keep at it even though it’s very hard for quite a while, because if you do you’ll come to love it. Also, if you can move, you can dance. I first started dancing at age 68 so age isn’t a barrier.
